Morelganj, Bagerhat, May 09 (V7N) – Bagerhat district BNP leaders visited the grave of Chhatra Dal activist Shafayet Hossain Talukder on Friday morning, expressing their condolences to his grieving family. Talukder died earlier this week following an arrest by law enforcement in Morelganj, Bagerhat.

Among the BNP leaders present were former vice-president Monirul Islam Khan, a member of the convening committee of Bagerhat District BNP; prominent social worker Monirul Haque Farazi, also a district BNP member and a former party nomination candidate for the Bagerhat-4 (Morelganj-Sharankhola) constituency; former general secretary of the district Jubo Dal Md. Sujan Molla; BNP leader of Kachua Upazila Shahidul Islam Khokon; and BNP leader of Khaulia Union Master Asaduzzaman.

After paying their respects at the grave, district BNP leader Monirul Islam Khan stated that the BNP does not condone extrajudicial killings, disappearances, or murders. He noted that the deceased Shafayet was a Chhatra Dal activist and that his family alleges he was beaten to death by law enforcement agencies without any charges being filed against him. Khan demanded a thorough investigation into the death and called upon higher authorities to ensure justice for the family. He assured Shafayet's parents of their commitment to seeking fair justice.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning around 8 am when a police team, led by SI Pintu, conducted a raid at the residence of retired school teacher Shahjahan Howlader in Jiudhara village of Nishanbaria Union to execute an arrest warrant for his son, Sohel Howlader. During the raid, Chhatra Dal activist Shafayet Talukder, the son of Howlader's cousin Faruk Hossain Talukder, was also arrested and reportedly died at the scene after allegedly being beaten by the police.
