PABNA, JUNE 03 (V7N) – A chilling mystery surrounding the death of a five-month-old infant in Chatmohar upazila has been unraveled by police, revealing that the child's own mother, Srabanti Biswas, confessed to the murder. The mother, reportedly suffering from mental anguish stemming from a child marriage and subsequent domestic hardships, drowned her daughter, Sohagi, in the Baral River.
Srabanti Biswas, who grew up in a poor family, was married at the age of thirteen to Kamal Mondal, a middle-aged daily wage laborer, after his first wife passed away. According to police, Srabanti became mentally disturbed due to a combination of factors, including her husband's two sons from his previous marriage, the family's poverty, and recurring arguments with her husband.
Approximately a year into her marriage, Srabanti gave birth to Sohagi. While Kamal Mondal was reportedly happy, Srabanti's mental state deteriorated further after the birth, finding household chores and childcare unbearable.
On Saturday, May 31, at around 7 AM, a mentally distressed Srabanti Biswas confessed to throwing her four-month and nine-day-old sleeping daughter into the Baral River, leading to her death. After the act, she joined relatives and others in a frantic search for the child. Upon the discovery of Sohagi's lifeless body on the riverbank near their home in Jaleswar Mandalpara village, Gunaigacha union, Srabanti feigned distress, claiming she didn't know who had taken and killed her sleeping child.
The incident initially created a local mystery. However, police investigations quickly led to Srabanti Biswas as the prime suspect. Police held a press briefing at Chatmohar Police Station on Monday, June 2, at 11 AM, to provide details of the case. Srabanti Biswas was arrested on Sunday, June 1, and subsequently sent to court, where she provided a confessional statement under Section 164 of the IPC regarding her child's murder.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (Chatmohar Circle) Arjuma Akhter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the police station Manjurul Alam, and investigating officer Awlad Hossain were present at the press briefing.
It was stated that on Saturday, May 31, at approximately 8 AM, Srabanti Biswas left her sleeping daughter Sohagi on the balcony of their house and went to a neighbor's house to collect cow dung. Upon her return, finding her daughter missing, she initiated a search. The child's body was later found face down in the nearby Baral River.
Srabanti Biswas's dramatic display of grief and eagerness to file a murder case initially diverted suspicion. However, inconsistencies in her statements prompted police to bring her in for questioning, which ultimately led to her confession. The press briefing confirmed that Srabanti Biswas killed her daughter due to domestic unrest and her inability to cope with raising a daughter.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Arjuma Akhter commented, "Mother Srabanti Biswas tried to dramatize the incident. She wanted to file a murder case herself demanding justice for killing her daughter. But we caught the mystery. The police were able to unravel the mystery in just four hours after the incident." The child's father, Kamal Mondal, has filed a murder case against Srabanti Biswas.
