RAJSHAHI, JUNE 07 (V7N) – Rajshahi city is currently experiencing a fresh outbreak of COVID-19, with test results from Monday, June 2, indicating that 9 out of 15 patients screened at the Microbiology Lab of Rajshahi Medical College tested positive. Authorities confirmed that most of these patients presented with mild fever, cold, and cough, and a significant majority – reportedly seven – are doctors.
Professor Khandaker Md. Faisal Alam, Principal of Rajshahi Medical College, confirmed these findings, noting that positive results have been consistently appearing in recent days. He explained that while the symptoms are mild and may not immediately suggest COVID-19, infected individuals are experiencing general weakness and a prolonged recovery period. The tests are being conducted by microbiology teachers.
The Principal also expressed concern that the issue of COVID-19 is not receiving adequate attention, largely because infected individuals are not typically requiring hospitalization. However, he stressed the importance of taking the situation seriously, particularly for the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions like diabetes, as the virus could lead to complications. He urged everyone to exercise caution.
Professor Alam also mentioned that current statistics on infected individuals are not being meticulously maintained. He advised that individuals over 60 years of age should undergo COVID-19 testing if they exhibit symptoms. Samples can be submitted at the microbiology department, requiring individuals to wear masks. The government fee for the test is Tk 100, with results typically available by noon.
Dr. Shankar K Biswas, spokesperson for Rajshahi Medical College Hospital and in-charge of the emergency department, corroborated that COVID-19 tests are conducted at the Rajshahi Medical College lab. He confirmed that one COVID-19 infected patient had been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for a few days, but noted that many positive cases might not require hospitalization due to their mild condition. The admitted patient's treatment is proceeding appropriately. Deputy Nursing Superintendent Kamrunnahar added that the previously admitted COVID patient has since been discharged after treatment, and the hospital remains prepared to provide services.
