Teknaf, Aug 27 (V7N) - Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered a significant cache of firearms and ammunition on Tuesday from the Naf River border area in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar. Authorities suspect the weapons were stockpiled for potential subversive activities.

On August 26, during a special riverine operation near Khurer Dwip in Teknaf’s Hnila border area, members of the 64th Battalion of BGB uncovered four high-powered firearms and 507 rounds of ammunition. The raid was led in person by Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Jasim Uddin, commander of the 64 BGB battalion in Ukhiya.

According to Lt. Col. Jasim Uddin, the operation was launched based on intelligence reports. While patrolling the river route, BGB troops noticed suspicious individuals, who upon seeing the patrol, fired a single round and fled towards Myanmar by boat. The BGB forces did not engage but launched an extensive search of the surrounding area.

During the search, BGB recovered the following items concealed in the terrain:

2 rifles, 1 LMG-16 (Light Machine Gun), 1 MI weapon, 8 magazines, 507 rounds of ammunition, including 199 rounds for G3 rifles, 120 MI rounds, and 188 LMG-16 rounds.

Initial investigation suggests that the weapons were smuggled into the country by criminal or militant groups through border routes and were being stored for terrorism, arms trafficking, or drug smuggling activities.

The BGB commander emphasized the force’s commitment to protecting national security and preventing any form of illegal intrusion across the border. He also confirmed that intelligence efforts have been intensified to trace the origin of the weapons and identify those responsible.

The seized weapons and ammunition are in the process of being handed over to Teknaf Model Police Station as part of legal procedures and further investigation.
