Mohanganj, Sept 4 (V7N) - Md. Insan Mia, secretary of the Maghan-Siyadhar Union Parishad in Mohanganj upazila of Netrokona district, has been accused of embezzling approximately Tk 20 lakh from local residents, elected members, and disadvantaged individuals by falsely promising them access to various Union Parishad services and social welfare schemes.

According to numerous complaints from villagers, business owners, and local political figures, the secretary took significant amounts of money in exchange for services such as tax documentation, birth certificates, and inclusion in various government support programs, including VGD/VGF cards, maternity allowances, submersible pumps, TCB cards, tube wells, and construction materials.

Victims claim that after collecting money from hundreds of individuals across nearly 20 villages, Insan Mia disappeared and has been absent from his post at the Union office for the past two months. As a result, residents seeking birth and death registrations or other civic services are being regularly turned away.

Eyewitness and documentary evidence from victims detail specific transactions, including:

Tk 45,000 from Ahad Mia of Sirampasha for a submersible pump, Tk 2,000 from Shamsu Mia of Siyadhar for a VGD card, Tk 30,000 from Sani Maya of Futiyoga for a tube well, Tk 35,000 from Shamim Mia of Siyadhar for a tube well, Tk 30,000 from Momen Mia of Khurshimol Bazar for a submersible pump, Tk 45,000 from Jharna Akter of Maizhaty for a TCB card and construction materials, Tk 15,000 from Bablu Master of Mohanganj Municipality, Tk 15,000 from Mukhlisur Rahman of Betam village for a tube well, Tk 17,000 from Maju Mia of Manshree village for a tube well, Tk 17,000 from UP Member Aftab Mia of Ward 8 for a tube well, Tk 45,000 from BNP leader Nazrul Mia, Tk 25,000 from Rahmat Ali of Ward 6 for two tube wells, Tk 10,000 from petrol trader Aziz, and Tk 27,000 from Ruman Mia of Nowhal village for a submersible pump.

Victims claim that when they attempted to contact Insan Mia, he offered various excuses, such as family emergencies or attending training in Dhaka. Some also reported being threatened with legal action if they continued calling.

A source within the local government office confirmed that Insan Mia was recently transferred to Kullagara Union in Durgapur upazila, but no formal investigation has yet been launched regarding the allegations.

Sopna Akter, a reserved seat member of Wards 1, 2, and 3, said, "The secretary has disappeared with money from hundreds of people. Every day, people come to the Union office asking for him and demanding their money back."

When contacted, Insan Mia denied all allegations, stating he did not take money from anyone.

Mohanganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer, (UNO) Amena Khatun responded to the situation, saying, “If we receive an official complaint, we will take appropriate legal action.”

The growing unrest in the community has prompted demands for a thorough investigation and the immediate suspension of the accused official to prevent further disruption to essential public services.
