Madaripur, Sept 20 (V7N) – A 22-year-old Bangladeshi youth from Madaripur has been killed in Libya after being shot by local mafia groups while attempting to migrate to Europe.
The victim was identified as Jibon Dhali, son of Kalam Dhali, a resident of Ward No. 2 under Mostafapur Union in Sadar upazila. According to family sources, Jibon traveled to Libya about six months ago through local brokers, hoping to reach Italy and secure a better future for his family.
On September 8, Jibon was shot dead in Libya. His companions, also Bangladeshi migrants, confirmed the news to his family via a phone call on Friday night, (Sept 19). The tragic news has cast deep grief over the village, where relatives and neighbors mourn the loss. Family members said Jibon was the only support for his parents, who collapsed repeatedly after hearing of his death.
Madaripur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge, (OC) Adil Hossain told reporters that many youths from Madaripur and other districts fall victim to human traffickers while attempting to reach Italy through Libya. He said police operations against human trafficking syndicates are ongoing and legal measures will be taken if formal complaints are filed against the brokers involved.
Local residents said that such deaths are becoming alarmingly common as traffickers exploit young men desperate for opportunities abroad. They urged the government to take strong action against trafficking networks and to provide financial and moral support to the bereaved families.
