Rajshahi, Sept 24 (V7N) – Even after light rainfall, the Puthia Upazila Health Complex in Rajshahi is submerged in waterlogging, causing immense suffering for patients and their families who come to the facility for treatment.

Local residents allege that the worsening condition is due to a lack of government attention. Because the hospital is situated in a low-lying area, dirty and foul-smelling stagnant water from nearby houses, roads, and establishments accumulates here. Over time, the hospital premises have turned into what locals describe as a “mosquito breeding ground.”

Recently appointed Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, Suchona Monohara, said, “I joined just a week ago. I have already informed the higher authorities and relevant departments. They assured me that steps will be taken soon to resolve the drainage problem.”

A visit to the health complex revealed that patients and their attendants are forced to wade through knee-deep water from the main gate to the wards. No temporary measures, such as walkways or elevated access, have been provided to ease their movement.

Patients and relatives voiced frustration, saying the stagnant water around the hospital mixes with filthy, decomposed drain water. They further reported that sewage from a broken pipe near the women’s ward toilets flows into the accumulated water, creating unbearable conditions. Many patients and attendants slip and fall on the flooded paths, resulting in injuries and damaged clothing.

A medical officer, speaking anonymously, said, “During heavy rainfall, excess water makes it extremely difficult even for us to reach the hospital. Though drains exist, negligence in their maintenance has blocked them with leaves and debris, preventing proper water flow. This recurring issue needs a permanent solution.”

Another officer confirmed the problem is longstanding. “We have repeatedly raised the issue in Upazila Coordination Committee meetings and informed the municipal authorities, but no effective action has been taken. Every day, thousands of patients seek treatment here. During the rainy season, both patients and staff face unbearable hardship to access the hospital. An urgent and permanent solution is needed,” he said.

The deteriorating condition of this key healthcare facility continues to threaten patient safety and undermine public health, with locals demanding immediate government intervention.
