Rajshahi, Oct 4 (V7N) – Voters in Rajshahi-1 (Godagari-Tanore) are anticipating their chance to vote for the first time in 15 years, amid speculation and debate over who will emerge victorious in the upcoming 13th national parliamentary elections. Local discussions range from informal tea gatherings to village platforms, reflecting a mix of hope and uncertainty among residents.

Potential candidates from both the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami are actively campaigning door-to-door, engaging communities, and promising development initiatives to win voter support. BNP-backed candidates are emphasizing the implementation of Tarique Rahman’s 31-point program, while Jamaat-supported contenders are promoting new leadership and a vision for governance based on Islamic principles.

The Rajshahi-1 constituency covers 767.53 square kilometers, with a population of 522,254, including 229,033 men and 236,976 women. The electorate totals 376,363 voters, with a significant portion belonging to ethnic minorities and Hindu communities. Many residents live modestly, working primarily in agriculture. Candidates are paying particular attention to these communities to secure support.

Historically, BNP has maintained strong influence in the area. Barrister Aminul Haque, a former Minister of Post and Telecommunications (2001–2006), previously represented the constituency in parliament and served as BNP Vice Chairman until his death. Jamaat-backed candidate Professor Mozibur Rahman was elected as an MP in 1986 and currently serves as Senior Deputy Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.

Nine BNP candidates are contesting the Rajshahi-1 seat, including Ava Haque (widow of Barrister Aminul Haque), Major General (Retd.) Sharif Uddin, Senior Advocate and Deputy Attorney General Mahfuzur Rahman Milon, Advocate Sultanul Islam Tarek, Sayedur Rahman Khan Markoni, Teacher Abdullah Al Mahmud Biplob, Engineer K.M. Jewel, Professor Shahadat Hossain Shahin, and Educator Bishwanath Sarkar. Jamaat’s nominee is Professor Mozibur Rahman, while Professor Dr. Muhammad Abdur Rahman Muhseni is coordinating for Amar Bangladesh Party.

Candidates are participating in rallies, public gatherings, sports events, and cultural celebrations, seeking to engage directly with voters. BNP hopeful Sultanul Islam Tarek emphasized his commitment to serving the community, highlighting his track record of integrity and strong support from indigenous and minority groups. Similarly, Major General (Retd.) Sharif Uddin cited his family legacy and longstanding public service as key reasons for his anticipated nomination.

Professor Mozibur Rahman expressed confidence in Jamaat-e-Islami’s current position, stating that the party’s campaign is grounded in Islamic teachings, justice, and public welfare. He affirmed that voters remain optimistic about the party’s prospects and promised to prioritize community development if elected.

As campaigning intensifies, Rajshahi-1 remains a highly competitive constituency with active engagement from multiple parties, reflecting the dynamic political landscape ahead of the national elections.
