Bagerhat, Oct 4 (V7N) – Journalists, political leaders, lawyers, social activists, and residents of Bagerhat have staged a human chain protest demanding justice for the brutal killing of journalist S.M. Hayat Uddin, a staff reporter of the Daily Vorer Chetona.
The demonstration was held on Saturday afternoon in front of the Bagerhat Press Club, organized by the club itself. Participants condemned the heinous attack, calling it a grave assault on press freedom and the rule of law in Bangladesh.
Speakers at the rally, including Bagerhat Press Club President Md. Kamruzzaman, General Secretary Robiul Islam, and District BNP President M.A. Salam, strongly urged law enforcement authorities to arrest and ensure exemplary punishment for all those involved in the killing.
They described Hayat Uddin as a fearless and principled journalist who was committed to truth and justice. Participants expressed solidarity with the victim’s family and pledged to support them throughout the legal process.
According to police, the attack took place on Friday evening in the Harikhali area of Bagerhat town, where unidentified assailants ambushed and fatally hacked Hayat Uddin. He was rushed to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Sources said Hayat had recently contested for the position of Organizing Secretary of the Bagerhat Municipal BNP. Law enforcement officials have launched an investigation into the killing, but no arrests have been made so far.
Human rights organizations and journalist associations across the country have also condemned the murder, urging the government to take immediate steps to protect media workers and ensure swift justice.
Police patrols have been intensified in the area as tension remains high among local journalists and residents following the tragic incident.
