Munshiganj, Oct 16 (V7N) – Journalists in Munshiganj formed a human chain on Wednesday demanding the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved in the brutal attack on Rahid Hossain, a cameraman of Independent Television. The protest took place at 11:00 a.m. in front of the Munshiganj Press Club on Jubilee Road.
During the demonstration, the journalists also called for the withdrawal of what they described as a “false and harassment-driven” case filed against Rahid Hossain, urging authorities to ensure justice through a fair and transparent investigation.
Speakers at the protest warned that if justice is not delivered promptly, journalists across the country would be forced to announce tougher programs to demand accountability and protect media freedom.
Among those who addressed the rally were Gulzar Hossain, Vice President of the Munshiganj Press Club; Sujon Haider Jony, General Secretary; Md. Rajibul Hasan Jewel, Organizing Secretary; Mainuddin Suman, NTV’s Special Correspondent and Editor of the local daily Munshiganjer Somoy; Md. Jasim Uddin, District Correspondent of Dainik Khola Kagoj; Md. Humayun Kabir of Khabarpatra; Arafat Raihan Sakib of Jamuna TV; Shuvo Ghosh of Channel 24; Jitu Roy of Independent TV; Md. Nazir Hossain of Banglabazar Patrika; and Tofazzal Hossain Shihab of Dainik Bhorer Kagoj.
Other participants included Jahangir Alam, Editor of News Seventy One TV and President of the Munshiganj District Online Press Club; Md. Kamal Hossain, President of the Munshiganj District Press Club; Jahangir Alam Dhali, President of Sammilito Sangskritik Jote; cultural activist Morium Akter Ayesha; and Rahid Hossain’s parents, Mohammad Ali and Taslima Begum.
Speakers condemned the attack as a “direct assault on press freedom,” emphasizing that failure to bring the perpetrators to justice would further endanger the safety and independence of journalists.
They also expressed frustration that seven days after the incident, police had yet to arrest anyone involved. Instead, a powerful local group allegedly influenced the filing of a false case against Rahid Hossain to intimidate him.
The attack occurred on October 7 in the Ramzanbeg Purbo Para area of Munshiganj municipality, reportedly over a family dispute. Rahid, while performing his professional duties, was assaulted by opponents in a violent incident that drew widespread outrage from the journalistic community nationwide.
