Mongla, Oct 17 (V7N) — Police have recovered the body of a newborn baby floating in a canal near Monpura Bridge in Ward No. 7 of Mongla Municipality, Bagerhat. The body was spotted by locals on Friday morning, who immediately informed the police.
According to police and residents, villagers noticed the infant’s body caught in tree roots along the canal’s edge and alerted authorities. With the help of locals, police later retrieved the decomposed body.
Rafiqul Islam, a local resident, said, “In the morning, we saw the body stuck beside a tree on the canal bank. It seems to have drifted here from another location.”
Manik Chandra Gain, Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Mongla Police Station, confirmed the recovery and said the newborn appeared to be four to five days old. “The body was already decomposing when we found it. Preliminary investigation suggests the baby might have been thrown into the canal shortly after birth by an unidentified person or family,” he added.
Police have launched an inquiry to identify those responsible and are proceeding with legal formalities.
The tragic discovery has left the local community deeply disturbed, with many calling for greater social awareness to prevent such inhumane acts in the future.
