Cox’s Bazar, Jan 05 (V7N) – Shahjahan Chowdhury, the BNP-nominated candidate and former Member of Parliament for Cox’s Bazar-4 (Ukhiya-Teknaf), has received a threat to withdraw from the upcoming 13th national parliamentary elections. The threat came in the form of a mailed letter on Sunday, which also contained a piece of white cloth allegedly symbolizing a shroud. The letter is dated December 23, 2025, and names Muminul Alam, identified as the regional coordinator of the so-called Battalion-71 in Cox’s Bazar, as the sender.

The letter stated, “Dear Sir, Assalamu Alaikum. I hope you are busy preparing for the election. I request that you refrain from participating in the upcoming national elections.” It further warned that if he does not step down, he would face consequences similar to those of Sharif Osman Hadi, claiming that he is under the “24-hour surveillance of a killing squad.”

Following the incident, BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman contacted Shahjahan Chowdhury to check on his safety. Chowdhury confirmed that the party leader had assured full support, though he remains in a state of heightened insecurity.

A general diary (GD) has been filed at Ukhiya Police Station regarding the threat. Officer-in-Charge Nur Ahmad confirmed that the GD was received and said that security would be strengthened as needed.

On the same day, Election Commissioner Brigadier General (Retd.) Abul Fazal Mohammad Sanaullah held a discussion on law and order in the constituency. When Sultan Mahmud Chowdhury, General Secretary of Ukhiya BNP, raised the threat, the Commissioner assured that the matter would be taken seriously and necessary actions would be implemented.

The incident has sparked concern and tension in the area, with local political leaders urging authorities to ensure a safe electoral environment and the security of candidates.
