A green vine snake, identified as Ahaetulla nasuta, a nearly extinct species known locally as the flying “Laudaga” snake, has been rediscovered in Kalapara Upazila of Patuakhali.
The snake, measuring approximately five feet in length, was found injured near Baliatali Union of the upazila around noon on Saturday.
According to reports, the snake had been crushed by a passing vehicle but was rescued and released into the Baliatali forest by locals.
Rakayet Ahsan, the team leader of Animal Lovers in Kalapara, stated that this reptile is on the brink of extinction in the area and was released by locals before their team could arrive at the scene.
Sagarika Smriti, an assistant biodiversity researcher from the private development organization World Fish, described the snake as dark green with a flat head and elongated body. She added that their diet primarily consists of spiders and other harmful insects found on various green plants.
Local residents reminisced that this species was once commonly sighted in the area even two decades ago, highlighting the significance of its rediscovery.
