MONGLA, February 26, (V7N) — A free eye care and cataract surgery program was successfully conducted in Mongla on Thursday, providing vital medical services to more than two hundred underprivileged patients. The initiative was organized by Drishtidan Eye Hospital, Bagerhat, in collaboration with the Sheikh Abdul Hai Foundation.
The camp was held from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Drishtidan Community Vision Center, located adjacent to the residence of the late Sheikh Abdul Hai, the former Chairman of Mongla Port Municipality. Residents from various wards of the municipality and neighboring rural areas gathered to receive specialized care for long-standing vision impairments.
A dedicated medical team, led by renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Tanmoy Saha, carried out comprehensive eye examinations, including vision testing and screenings for glaucoma and cataracts. In addition to the check-ups, the organizers distributed necessary medicines and provided expert medical advice to all attendees free of cost.
Following the screenings, 23 patients diagnosed with advanced cataracts were selected for surgery. These patients were transported to Drishtidan Eye Hospital in Bagerhat for the procedures. The foundation confirmed that all surgical costs, including post-operative care, would be covered, and the patients would be safely escorted back to Mongla once they are cleared by doctors.
"Our goal is to restore sight to the helpless and poor who cannot afford private treatment," a representative of the Sheikh Abdul Hai Foundation stated. They emphasized that such humanitarian efforts are part of a broader commitment to improving public health in the coastal region and will continue regularly in the future.
Local residents expressed deep gratitude for the initiative, noting that the rising cost of specialized healthcare has made it difficult for many to address preventable blindness. The success of the camp has prompted calls for more frequent specialized medical drives in the Mongla Port area to support the aging population.
