"The Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh declares the people as the owners of the country. Therefore, it is the responsibility and duty of the citizens to vote for candidates who are honest, qualified, patriotic, and committed to the welfare of the people, thereby mitigating all forms of conflict and violence.
Failure to fulfill this responsibility and duty properly may lead to the incompetent coming to power, the consequences of which will be borne by the citizens themselves.
With the initiative of PFJ in Ukhiya, a press conference was held on May 25, 2024, chaired by Sultan Mahmud Chowdhury, the Joint General Secretary of Ukhiya Upazila Awami League, to urge for the election of mostly honest and qualified candidates to mitigate conflict and violence in the upcoming Ukhiya Upazila Parishad elections.
Nur Mohammad Shikdar, Co-ordinator of PFJ in Ukhiya, and President of Ukhiya Upazila Journalists' Association, chaired the conference. Speaking at the press conference, Ratna Kanti De, General Secretary of Ukhiya Press Club, on behalf of PFJ, urged the voters and candidates to adhere to the Code of Conduct for Election prepared by the Election Commission.
He stated, 'Due to election violence, a fatal incident occurred in the neighboring Eidgah Union, resulting in one death and over a hundred injuries. As PFJ members, we do not want to see such incidents of violence in Ukhiya. Therefore, I urge both the candidates and voters to abide by the Code of Conduct prepared by the Election Commission.'
Former General Editors of Ukhiya Press Club, Faruk Ahmed, Humayun Kabir Jusan, Ayas Rabi, Polash Barua, Shahidul Islam, and Abdullah Al Jubair, along with journalists from various electronic and print media, were present at the press conference, alongside representatives from various political parties and professional groups in Ukhiya."
