In a devastating turn of events, Cyclone Remal has unleashed chaos in Rema Upazila of Pirojpur district. With heavy winds and torrential rainfall, the region is grappling with rising water levels and widespread destruction.

The impact of a fierce cyclone has plunged the lives of residents Rema Upazila, Pirojpur in Bangladesh , into chaos. Since on Sundy, (May 26) the intensity of Cyclone Remal has been increasing rapidly from midday onwards, escalating during the deep hours of the night.

Continuous heavy winds and torrential rainfall persisted until this afternoon, on Monday. Starting from midnight, the relentless wind and incessant downpour have caused a rise of 7 to 8 feet in water levels in rivers and low-lying areas. The water level continues to rise gradually, sparking concerns of significantly higher damage compared to the cyclone Sidr in 2007.

People residing along the banks of the Boleshwar River in Mathbaria Upazila and those living in the district are seeking refuge in shelters, terrified by the situation. Following the issuance of cyclone warning signal number 10 on Sunday, countless families sought shelter, along with their livestock, in the designated shelters. Numerous roads, embankments, fish enclosures, trees, and wooden houses have been destroyed, leading to a halt in most of the affected areas' daily activities.

The water level has risen by 7 to 8 feet compared to normal conditions in areas adjacent to the Boleshwar River due to increased flow from the turbulent tide of Boleshwar up to the Mathbaria region, including Kheta Chira, Bhaizora, Kochubariya, Nizamia, Bhulmara, Ulubariya, Machuya, Jankhali, and Tushkhali. In these areas, where unplanned embankments have been constructed in canals, waterlogging has occurred due to flooding.

The residents of Mathbaria, residing in Gram and Warless operators, are facing heightened risk conditions. Abdul Halim, a Warless operator from the area, stated that around 200 families have been affected by the new cyclone, akin to the catastrophic cyclone Sidr of November 15, 2007. However, with cyclone shelters prepared, people are seeking refuge there, while many families are vacating their homes for safer structures.

The southern and western sides of the mid-char are in extremely precarious conditions due to the destruction of embankments. In response, extensive preparations have been made to combat the disaster in Mathbaria Upazila.

The Cyclone Control Room has been activated, along with special alerts issued to emergency service institutions such as the Fire Service, Electricity Department, Department of Public Health Engineering, and Ansar and VDP.

Additionally, arrangements have been made to ensure the availability of emergency food and medicine. District administrator Abdul Kaiyum mentioned these measures, emphasizing the zero-error approach in managing the crisis.
