Khagrachari, Aug 03 (V7N) - In Khagrachari, continuous heavy rainfall over the past two days has left several hundred families stranded. The heavy rain has caused the water levels of the Chengi and Maini rivers to rise, flooding the homes of many families. Since early Friday morning, water has inundated residential areas in Khagrachari Sadar, including Muslimpara, Mehedibag, Kaladeba, Ganjpara, College Road, and Thakurchar. The low-lying areas along the banks of the Chengi and Maini rivers have been particularly affected.
Residents living along the riverbanks and streams have faced significant hardships as their homes have been flooded three times within the past two months. With the heavy rain continuing, there is a risk that the water level in the Maini River in Dighinala may rise further, potentially flooding the old market area of Dighinala.
Additionally, agricultural land along the Merung and Kabakhali rivers in Dighinala has been submerged. The ongoing rainfall also poses a risk of landslides. Local authorities have set up 10 shelters across various locations in the district town to accommodate affected people.
District Commissioner Md. Sahiduzzaman stated that shelters have been opened for those affected by the severe flooding. Preparations are in place to handle any situation that may arise.
