Pabna, Sep 15 (V7N) – Barrister Najibur Rahman Momen, son of the late Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami and a former leader of Jamaat-e-Islami, has called for Sheikh Hasina and her associates to be held accountable in a court of law. He emphasized that Jamaat-e-Islami advocates for justice rather than revenge.
Speaking at a prayer gathering in Manmathpur village, Santhia Upazila, Pabna, on Saturday (September 14), Momen criticized Sheikh Hasina's government, accusing it of perpetrating violence and injustice. He recalled that after Hasina alleged that the children of war criminals were conspiring against the state, he fled the country in May 2016 due to fears for his safety. Momen also noted that he was unable to attend his father’s funeral after his execution, and this was his first return to the country in over eight years to visit his father’s grave.
Momen insisted that those involved in the so-called trials that led to his father’s execution on false charges must be thoroughly investigated. He stressed that the government has a duty to ensure a fair investigation into the handling of these trials and the management of witnesses.
In response to queries about his political ambitions, Momen stated that he does not seek any official position but is willing to run for the Pabna-1 (Santhia-Bera) constituency in the upcoming national elections if requested by his party and local residents.
After returning from London on September 13, Momen was welcomed by Jamaat-e-Islami supporters at Dhaka airport. On September 14, he was greeted by thousands of supporters at Baghabari Mor in Sirajganj before attending a rally in Bera and visiting his father’s grave in Santhia. A prayer gathering was also held in his father’s honor.
The events saw the participation of key Jamaat-e-Islami leaders, including Professor Abu Taleb Mondol, former district Ameer Abdur Rahim, Assistant Secretary Abu Saleh Md. Abdullah, Dr. Abdul Bashed, and Maulana Mokhlesur Rahman, among others.
