Mongla, Sept 19, V7N - Forty reconditioned cars imported through Mongla port are set to be auctioned, with participants able to register and bid via Bangladesh Customs' e-auction platform. Interested individuals can also submit bids at Mongla Customs House and VAT Commissionerates in Khulna, Dhaka South, and Chittagong starting Monday, September 23. The auction results will be announced on September 29, when the highest bidders will be selected. These cars are being auctioned as importers failed to clear them within the 30-day window required by customs regulations.

Mongla Customs House Assistant Commissioner Md. Rubel Hasan stated that the vehicles up for auction include a variety of models, such as hi-tech cars, dump trucks, and microbuses. He emphasized that these vehicles are being auctioned because they were not cleared within the specified timeframe after their import.

In a similar auction held in June and August, 19 luxury vehicles were sold, including models like Toyota Viz, Pajero, and Aqua Hybrid, with 10 of them successfully sold.

Mongla Customs officials revealed that 52% of the port's revenue is generated from customs duties on imported vehicles. Long delays in clearing vehicles hinder customs clearance, which is why auctions are essential for ensuring timely revenue collection and maintaining efficient operations for traders.

According to traffic sources at Mongla Port Authority, the port began handling reconditioned car imports in 2009 when Hawke's Bay Automobile Company brought in 255 cars. Since then, a total of 1,87,851 reconditioned vehicles have been imported from Japan and Singapore, with 1,86,924 already cleared. However, 1,927 vehicles remain stored in various yards at Mongla Bandar Jetty awaiting clearance.
