To mark the 55th anniversary of Dr. Shamsuzzoha's martyrdom, Rajshahi University (RU) officials appropriately commemorated "Teachers' Day" on campus on Sunday, in honor of "Zoha Day."
When Dr. Shamsuzzoha raced to the RU main gate on this day in 1969 to defend the students who were marching towards the town in violation of Section 144, he was shot and killed by the then-Pakistani military junta.
Zoha was a Chemistry Department instructor and the RU proctor. His murder caused violent demonstrations across what was then East Pakistan, which ultimately brought down the despotic Ayub administration. The nation's first Martyred Intellectual is Dr. Zoha. The RU officials planned several elaborate events to commemorate the day, such as raising the black flag over all dorms, academic and administrative buildings, laying flowers at Zoha's tomb, hosting a Zoha Memorial Lecture, having special prayers, and hosting a doa mahfil at the central mosque.
Wreaths were put on Dr. Zoha's grave and memorial plaque by Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof. Golam Sabbir Sattar, Pro-VCs Profs. Sultan-Ul-Islam and Humayun Kabir, and Treasurer Prof. Obaidur Rahman Pramanik, along with other university officials, instructors, and students.
The lecture entitled 'Our Education Thinking' was presented as the Zoha Memorial Lecture at Senate Bhaban. Former Education Secretary and Head of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Museum, the Father of the Nation As the main speaker, Nazrul Islam Khan was seated in the chair behind Prof. Chowdhury Muhammad Jakaria, the head of the chemistry department.
Pro-VCs Prof. Sultan-Ul-Islam and Prof. Humayun Kabir gave special remarks during the lecture session, with RU VC Prof. Golam Sabbir Sattar serving as the chief guest.
The Rajshahi University Journalists' Association (Ruja), Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Rajshahi University Teachers Association (RUTA), Progressive Teachers' Society (PTS), officers' associations, and other socio-cultural organizations observed the day with talks and special prayers.
A talk was also organized by Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall. To commemorate the day, the RU Chemistry Department held a quiet parade throughout campus.
