Dhaka, Aug 22 (V7N) – Students from Dhaka College and City College clashed violently on Thursday over a dispute involving seating arrangements at a local coaching center, leading to a temporary shutdown of traffic in the busy Science Lab and New Market areas of the capital.

The conflict reportedly stemmed from a verbal altercation on Tuesday at the coaching center "Udbhash," which escalated into a full-blown confrontation between students from both colleges.

According to New Market Police Station Officer-in-Charge, (OC) A.K.M. Mahfuzul Haque, the clashes began around 11:00 a.m., when students armed with sticks took to the streets, throwing bricks and engaging in repeated chases. In the course of the violence, some students allegedly attacked police officers attempting to restore order. At least 10 people, including several police personnel, were injured.

Traffic in the surrounding areas, including Science Lab, New Market, and adjacent roads, came to a standstill as the unrest intensified. Long tailbacks were reported across major intersections.

By approximately 3:00 p.m., law enforcement brought the situation under partial control, allowing vehicular movement to resume. However, police presence remains heavy in front of both colleges, and tension continues to hang over the area.

OC Mahfuzul Haque stated that the authorities had been aware of tensions brewing between the two institutions since Tuesday’s altercation. Despite efforts to monitor the situation, Thursday’s large-scale clash caught many by surprise.
