Dhaka, Feb 03 (V7N) — Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX) is witnessing unrest at G.M.A.G. Osmani Hall and Syed Nazrul Islam Hall following allegations of insulting the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) by a student.
The accused, Muaz Muhammad Arefin Talukder, a 50th batch student of the Department of Dyes and Chemical Engineering and a resident of Syed Nazrul Islam Hall, reportedly made objectionable remarks in a Facebook post on Sunday (February 2) regarding Jannat Naim's child marriage. The post quickly went viral, sparking outrage among students.
Angry students gathered and detained Muaz in the hall premises. University administration officials arrived to control the situation, and faculty members took him to the provost's office. As tensions escalated, police were called in and later took Muaz into custody at around 1:30 am. However, on the way to the police station, some agitated students allegedly assaulted him.
Speaking on the incident, Muaz claimed, “I felt very small due to my physical illness and was angry with God. Later, during my intermediate studies, a friend introduced me to certain ideas, and I followed this path. I also believe that Shahidul Bhai, a 48th batch student of my department, shares similar views.”
Students, however, have strongly condemned the incident. Saidur Rahman Rafi, a 47th batch student, stated, “It all started with his inappropriate Facebook comment, which quickly spread. Around 9 pm, he was detained and interrogated at the hall. A senior student asked him to apologize, but we believe there are others behind this. We demand strict punishment for Muaz so that no one dares to commit such an act in the future.”
In response, the university administration has assured students that appropriate action will be taken against the accused. Efforts are underway to restore normalcy on campus and prevent further escalation.
