DHAKA, July 9 (V7N ) – The Ministry of Housing and Public Works (HPW) today announced a significant decision, cancelling the allocation of 12 under-construction flats in Dhanmondi. These flats were originally designated for a group of former secretaries, retired judges, and other high-ranking retired government officials. The move, communicated via a ministry press release, underscores a broader push for transparency in public resource allocation by the interim government.

The flats are part of a project titled “Construction of residential flats in various abandoned houses in Dhanmondi and Mohammadpur, Dhaka (Housing Dhanmondi) (Phase 1),” being implemented by the National Housing Authority. Specifically, these units are located in House No. 711 (New-63) of Road No. 13 (New-6/A) in the upscale Dhanmondi Residential Area. The project aims to utilize abandoned properties to create new residential spaces in the city.

The list of affected individuals includes prominent figures such as Md. Zahurul Haque, a retired judge and former commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission, along with several former senior secretaries, including Dr. Md. Mozammel Haque Khan, who also served as an ACC commissioner, and Md. Anisur Rahman, a former election commissioner. Other former secretaries, a former Director General of Secondary and Higher Education, and retired judges are also among those whose allocations have been revoked. The sizes of the flats varied, ranging from approximately 2,049 square feet to over 4,300 square feet.

This decisive action by the HPW Ministry follows a thorough review process. The cancellations were made in strict accordance with the findings and recommendations presented in a report by a committee formed specifically for this purpose by the National Housing Authority. Furthermore, the decision received official endorsement during the National Housing Authority's 274th board meeting, indicating a well-considered and institutionalized approach to the matter.

The cancellation reflects the interim government's stated commitment to enhancing transparency and accountability within the administration, particularly concerning the allocation of public assets and benefits to former senior officials. By reviewing these high-value property allocations, the government aims to ensure fairness and proper utilization of resources, sending a clear message about its dedication to good governance and preventing any perception of undue privilege.
