Dhaka, Apr 22 (V7N)- In the wake of violent clashes between students of Dhaka College and City College, the authorities of Dhaka City College have announced a temporary closure of the institution for Wednesday and Thursday (April 23-24). The decision was made to avoid further unrest and ensure student safety.
Acting Principal FM Mubarak Hossain made the announcement around 3:30 PM on Tuesday, stating that the college will remain closed for two days as a precautionary measure.
“The entire matter should be left to law enforcement. We have already filed a complaint with the administration regarding the damages to our infrastructure,” he said, urging students not to engage in any form of conflict.
The acting principal added that authorities will ensure compensation for the damage caused during the clashes and called for calm among students.
However, a significant number of students rejected the closure, chanting slogans in protest, further highlighting the tension on campus.
Earlier in the day, the Science Laboratory area in Dhaka saw violent confrontations between the two groups of students. The situation escalated rapidly, leading to road closures from Nilkhet to Science Lab. Eyewitnesses reported stone-throwing, chase-and-counter-chase, and vandalism in the area.
Law enforcement agencies were deployed to bring the situation under control, but tensions remained high into the afternoon.
Authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause of the clashes, but local sources suggest it stemmed from an earlier altercation involving students from both institutions.
Traffic disruption in the busy intersection caused major delays, with commuters stranded and shopkeepers forced to shut down early. Police are currently investigating the incident and monitoring the situation closely.
The administration has assured that legal steps will be taken against those responsible for the violence and that additional security measures will be placed in and around educational institutions in the area.
