On Wednesday, March 13, Khulna University observed Mourning Day in remembrance of the Katka tragedy. On this day in 2004, 11 students—9 from the architecture department at Khulna University and 2 from BUET—drowned in the sea while on a field trip to Cuttack, in the Sundarbans. Ever since Khulna University has marked this day as a day of grief on an annual basis.
On the eve of University Mourning Day, a sympathy rally headed by the vice-chancellor began from Hadi Square at 10:15 am, circled the Shahid Tajuddin Ahmad administration building, and concluded at the Katka monument while donning black badges. Professor Dr. Mahmud Hossain, the vice-chancellor, paid respects right away.
A memorial ceremony and condolence gathering were later scheduled for the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Academic Building's Journalist Liaquat Ali Auditorium at 10:45 am.
A moment of silence was held at the start of the conference in honor of the students who perished in the sea. During the event, two deserving but underprivileged students in the respective fields received computers from their classmates who had died in combat.
In the meantime, prayers were said to ask for forgiveness for the souls of the students who were slain at Jame Masjid, which is next to the University Central Jame Masjid and the Administration Building. The prayer event was attended by authorities, staff, and university lecturers, and students. In addition, following Maghrib, Iftar, and supper have been planned with orphans.
