Dhaka, Aug 25 (V7N) – A sit-in blockade of Jagannath University’s administration building began at 3 p.m. on Sunday, with students locking the gates under a “no work” directive. Officials, including the Vice‑Chancellor, Registrar, Treasurer, Proctor, and Student Welfare Director, remain inside the building as of 11 p.m., along with other faculty members who arrived for routine responsibilities.

Protesting students have outlined two primary demands:

Formation of an Election Commission, promulgation of election rules as law within 10 working days, and issuance of an election schedule on the day of the university syndicate meeting on August 26.

Final implementation of supplementary scholarships by October.

Student demonstrators insist their protest will continue until their demands are met.

Vice‑Chancellor Professor Dr. Rezaul Karim publicly acknowledged the legitimacy of the students' demands but cited administrative constraints. He confirmed that amendment to the university's election regulations has been approved but not yet delivered. Without an official ordinance, the announcement of an election date remains impossible, and drafting legal regulations within 10 working days falls beyond his authority. He urged students to understand these procedural limitations.

As the blockade persists, pressure is mounting on the university to expedite both election preparations and scholarship roll‑out.
