Chattogram, Oct 16 (V7N) – Tensions escalated at Chattogram University (CU) on Wednesday night after the results of the hall parliament elections sparked clashes between the Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir student organizations. The unrest began around 12:50 AM near the Faculty of Engineering building and continued past 1:10 AM, with both groups remaining on-site.
Leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal reportedly confined Professor Md. Kamal Uddin, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), inside the Faculty of Engineering building. They alleged that the election results for the Vice President position in Suhrawardy Hall had been manipulated. According to their claim, Jamadiul Awal of Chhatra Dal received 1,203 votes, while Niamat Ullah, supported by Chhatra Shibir, received 1,206 votes.
Chhatra Dal activists specifically pointed to Room 312 of the Faculty of Engineering, where students from the Philosophy and Culture departments cast their votes. They alleged that Jamadiul Awal received only three votes in this room, despite his strong relationships with many students there, suggesting possible tampering.
When contacted, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Md. Kamal Uddin said that he was leaving after the announcement of the results when a group of students blocked his way, demanding a recount of votes in Room 312. He advised them to consult the university’s election commission, but the students refused and continued to detain him. As of the latest reports, he remains confined at the location.
The incident has drawn attention to concerns over election transparency at Chittagong University, highlighting the rising tensions among student political groups and the administration.
