Tangail, July 16 (V7N) – The Chhatra League activists were compelled to retreat in Tangail amidst anti-quota protests. Initially, the Chhatra League had control over the Nirala Mor area of the city. However, upon hearing that general students opposing the quota system were converging in the city, the district Chhatra League vacated the area.
On Tuesday (July 16) at around 11:00 AM, a few leaders and activists of the district Chhatra League gathered at Tangail Nirala Mor. During this time, some anti-quota general students were marching towards Nirala Mor, and the Chhatra League activists chased them away, led by district Chhatra League president Sohanur Rahman Sohan. Three students were injured in the attack by Chhatra League.
Later, a group of general students gathered at Tangail Udyan. From there, they moved to Tangail Press Club and protested by blocking the road. Subsequently, several hundred students from Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University and MM Ali Government College entered the city in a procession. This led to a tense atmosphere in the city. Upon hearing that hundreds of anti-quota students were marching towards the city, the Chhatra League activists at Nirala Mor fled in fear. Later, students from various educational institutions gathered and marched to the Ashikpur Bypass on the Dhaka-Tangail highway.
Meanwhile, a large number of law enforcement personnel have been deployed at various locations in the city to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain strict control.
The general students stated that the Chhatra League activists attacked their peaceful anti-quota demonstration with sticks and rods, injuring three students. One of the seriously injured students was admitted to Sheikh Hasina Medical College Hospital.
District Chhatra League president Sohanur Rahman Sohan said that they held a peaceful sit-in program at Nirala Mor to prevent any disorder in the city. He mentioned that when the general students chanted slogans like ‘Who are you, who am I, Rajakar Rajakar,’ the Chhatra League members protested in response but did not attack anyone. They left the area at around 12:00 PM.
District Police Superintendent Golam Sabbir stated that students from various colleges were participating in the anti-quota movement. The Chhatra League activists had also taken a position but were later removed. He added that peaceful protests are their democratic right, and as long as there is no harm to the public or disruption of law and order, it is acceptable. However, any act of vandalism or disorder that creates panic will be dealt with legally.
