Chattogram, July 18 (V7N) — Most residential students at Chittagong University (CU) refused to vacate their halls on Wednesday, defying an administrative directive.
In response, the CU administration extended the deadline to 10 am on Thursday.
The CU syndicate decided to close the university indefinitely, instructing female students to leave the halls by 6 pm on Wednesday (July 17) and male students by 9:30 pm. Provosts were instructed to seal all rooms once vacated.
By the deadline, only female students had vacated Folilatunnesa Mujib Hall. Most students remained in the other four halls.
The students submitted a written application to the vice-chancellor with a three-point demand, citing their inability to leave. Their demands included:
General students cannot be forced to leave under any circumstances.
The university administration must ensure round-the-clock security outside the halls.
A house tutor must be present at all times to ensure the safety of students remaining in the halls.
One student remarked, "The university administration ordered us to leave in a hurry. For students like me, whose homes are far away, it is impossible to leave immediately. We need to stay in the hall, especially with our peers agitating. We can't leave them and go home right now."
CU Proctor Ohidul Alam acknowledged the students' concerns, noting that many live far from campus, making it difficult to leave within the stipulated time.
"They appealed, and in response, we extended the deadline to 10 am on Thursday. If anyone stays beyond this, the university administration will not be responsible for the situation," he said.
