Dhaka, Aug 01 (V7N) - In response to the escalating student protests across the nation, Dhaka University has seen a surge of demonstrations involving teachers, students, and officials from various departments. On Thursday, these groups organized protest rallies, human chains, and a procession on campus.
The Public Administration Department led a significant protest at the Oporajeyo Bangla monument, condemning a recent police attack on two of their faculty members. The incident occurred on Wednesday at the High Court, where the teachers were intervening to prevent the detention of their students by law enforcement.
Simultaneously, students and faculty from the Economics Department held a pre-scheduled rally at the same location. Their demonstration was a response to the government's alleged harassment of both teachers and students.
Additionally, the “Anti-Discrimination Teachers Gathering,” which included members from both the BNP-backed White Panel and left-leaning teachers, organized another rally. This event saw participation from several non-political teachers and students as well.
Professor Asif Nazrul of the Law Department addressed the rally, stating, "The current government is complicit in the killings and is obstructing justice. We have seen videos showing students being shot, and yet the government falsely claims that terrorists are responsible. This administration's actions are a direct threat to our existence, and we will not remain silent."
Nazrul also criticized the government's claims, noting that firearms were in the hands of Jubo League and Chhatra League activists, despite the government's assertions of terrorist involvement. He emphasized that attacks on students are attacks on the nation itself and vowed that teachers would not accept the situation passively.
The rally concluded with the announcement of the “Droho Zatra (Revolt March),” scheduled to begin from the National Press Club at 3 pm on Friday. The march will proceed to the Central Shaheed Minar, and individuals from various professions, including university teachers, engineers, and doctors, are invited to join.
Earlier in the day, at approximately 1:15 pm, a silent procession was held from Raju Sculpture to the Shaheed Minar, where participants observed a minute of silence in honor of those killed during the quota reform protests.
