JU, Aug 28 (V7N) - On Wednesday, students of Jahangirnagar University staged a demonstration to protest the sexual harassment of female students on campus. The protest began with a procession from the Shaheed Minar and continued through several roads, concluding with a rally at Battala on campus.
The demonstration was triggered by a recent incident where a female student was sexually assaulted on a road adjacent to Khaleda Zia Hall on Sunday night around 10:30 pm. The perpetrators have not yet been identified, according to the students.
During the rally, participants called for increased safety measures on campus, including the installation of more lamp posts, CCTV cameras at key points, and enhanced security for women students.
Prapti Taposhi, a student from the Economics Department, expressed frustration over the inadequate security. “On August 25, one of our classmates was harassed on her way to the hall. It highlights the weakness in our security system that such incidents can occur openly. There were no CCTV cameras at the boundary gate to identify the offenders, and no security guards were present in the area. After the incident was posted on Facebook, it became evident that similar assaults have happened before. The students are now feeling extremely insecure,” she said.
