Iconic Indian singer and recipient of the Padmashri award, Pankaj Udhas, breathed his last today. The legendary ghazal maestro, acclaimed for timeless melodies like "Chitti Ayi Hai" and "Chandi Jai Rang", succumbed to a prolonged illness at the age of 73, as confirmed by his daughter Nayaab Udhas.

Taking to Instagram, Nayaab Udhas shared the heartbreaking news, announcing, "It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February 2024 after a prolonged illness."

Born on May 17, 1951, in Jetpur, India, Pankaj Udhas carved a niche for himself in the world of Indian ghazals and playback singing. His illustrious career took flight with the release of his debut ghazal album "Aahat" in 1980, followed by a string of chart-topping albums like "Mukarar" (1981), "Tarrannum" (1982), "Mehfil" (1983), "Pankaj Udhas Live" at Royal Albert Hall (1984), "Nayaab" (1985), and "Aafreen" (1986).

Udhas shot to fame with his soul-stirring rendition of "Chitthi Aayee Hai" from the 1986 film "Naam", composed by Mahesh Bhatt. His enchanting voice graced numerous Hindi film soundtracks thereafter, solidifying his status as a versatile playback singer. Moreover, Udhas's captivating performances in live concerts worldwide earned him international acclaim as a maestro of ghazals.

In recognition of his contributions to Indian music, Pankaj Udhas was honored with the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2006, cementing his legacy as one of India's most revered vocalists.
