Dhaka, Jan 03 (V7N) —The Public Works Department has changed the name of the United Nations Park located in the Pahartali Residential Area of Chittagong city.
To preserve the memory of the July Mass Uprising, the park has been renamed "July Smriti Udyan" (July Memorial Park).
After renovations and the name change, it was inaugurated on Friday, at noon.
Adviser to the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Adilur Rahman Khan, inaugurated the park.
During the inauguration, Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan said: "In memory of Shaheed Wasim Akram of July-August, a flyover will be built in his name in Chittagong, and here, the July Smriti Udyan has been established to honor the martyrs. This is to ensure that fascism never returns, and future generations can remember the sacrifices of the martyrs of July-August."
Executive Engineer of Chittagong's Public Works Department, Kamrul Hasan Khan, mentioned that the park's renovation was completed three months ago.
The Public Works Ministry had instructed to rename the park as "July Smriti Udyan."
In 2022, the project titled "Establishment of a modern United Nations Green Park in Pahartali Residential Area, Chittagong" was approved by the former planning minister.
The project, implemented by the Public Works Department, cost approximately Tk12 crore 62 lakh.
The project was completed last July, and the park features green spaces, walking paths, tree planting, and play equipment for children, as well as exercise equipment for adults.
