8,543 lives lost on roads in 2024: Report

Dhaka, Jan 04 (V7N)— A total of 8,543 people lost their lives, and 12,608 were injured in road accidents across the country in 2024.
Mojammel Hossain Chowdhury, general secretary of Jatri Kalyan Samity revealed the annual report of the organization on road accidents at a press conference held at the Sagar-Runi Auditorium of the Dhaka Reporters' Unity on Saturday.
Besides 9,237 fatalities and 13,190 injuries were recorded in 6,974 accidents on roads, railways, and waterways during the period.
According to the report, 497 railway accidents resulted in 512 deaths and 315 injuries.
Besides, 118 waterway accidents caused 182 deaths and 267 injuries, leaving 155 people missing.
Among 6,359 road accidents, 2,329 were motorcycle accidents leading to 2,570 fatalities and 3,151 injuries during this period.
Earlier, In Rajshahi’s Mohonpur, a tragic road accident claimed the lives of three motorcyclists leaving one person in critical injuries while another accident between a bus and a motorcycle resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left four others seriously injured in Naogaon’s Mahadevpur.

Both incidents occurred on Wednesday.


At around 6:15pm in the Kalitala area of Keshorhat Municipality under the Rajshahi district, an accident occurred.

The victims of the accident were identified as Md Kawsar,19, son of Azim Uddin from Bonkura of Manda municipality under the Naogaon district, Md Kawsar Rahman,18, son of Sikandar Ali from South Chak Balu in Manda, and Md Palash,15, son of Asab from the same area.

Another individual, Shri Santu,30, son of Shri Niren from Bathail village in Manda, was severely injured and transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) for treatment.

According to the police, the motorcyclists were travelling towards Naogaon along the Rajshahi-Naogaon regional highway. When they reached Kalitala, an unidentified vehicle hit the motorcycle, causing them to fall onto the road.

Three of the riders died instantly, while Shri Santu was critically injured.

Following the accident, traffic on the highway was temporarily disrupted but was soon restored after the police intervened.

Abdul Hannan, Officer-in-Charge of Mohonpur Police Station, confirmed the incident saying: “The bodies of the deceased have been recovered and sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) for post-mortem examination. Traffic on the highway is currently normal, and a case will be filed regarding the incident.”

On the other hand, in Naogaon’s Mahadevpur, a head-on collision between a bus and a motorcycle resulted in the deaths of two people and left four others seriously injured.

The collision occurred on Wednesday, at around 11am at Khuntir Mor on the Mahadevpur-Nazipur regional highway.

The deceased were identified as Mosharraf Hossain, son of Ishak Sarder from West Khapur village, who is also the superviser of the Dhaka-bound Tonoy bus, and Md Aftab Uddin, a health assistant at the Mahadevpur Upazila Health Complex.

The injured included Arif Hossain, son of Mobarak Hossain from Mohinagar, Ansar Ali, son of the late Abul Hossain from Chakpara, Panchagarh, Sita, daughter of Iliyas Ali from Patichara, Patnitala; and Batraj, son of Nimai from Herem Sonadighi, Dhamoirhat.

Locals reported that the bus, while trying to manoeuvre around a parked microbus on the roadside, collided with a motorcycle emerging from a side road. Mosharraf Hossain died on the spot due to the collision. Md Aftab Uddin, who was critically injured, succumbed to his injuries on the way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH).

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Hashmat Ali of Mahadevpur Police Station said: “The scene had been inspected along with higher authorities, and legal measures have been taken regarding the incident.”
