Tangail, Feb 27, (V7N) – The name of the "Bangabandhu Bridge" over the Jamuna River in Tangail has been changed to "Jamuna Bridge." The announcement was made through a notification issued by the Bridge Division of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges on Wednesday, February 26.

Ahsanul Kabir Pavel, Executive Engineer of the Jamuna Bridge site office, confirmed the name change in a statement to Dhaka Mail on the same evening. He stated that the bridge's name has officially been changed to Jamuna Bridge, effective immediately.

It is worth mentioning that during the anti-discrimination student movement and mass uprising, on August 5, after the resignation and exile of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, local protesting students and citizens blackened the mural of Bangabandhu on both ends of the bridge in Tangail and Sirajganj.

The Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge was inaugurated on June 23, 1998. Initially named after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the bridge played a significant role in connecting the road and rail networks between the eastern and western parts of the country, linking Tangail and Sirajganj to the capital and beyond.
