DHAKA, March 25, 2025 (V7N) – Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has emphasized the timely completion of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, considering the country's increasing electricity demand.

“We have prioritized the on-time completion of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in response to Bangladesh's growing need for electricity,” Yunus stated in a televised national address ahead of Great Independence Day and Eid-ul-Fitr.

He noted that the Director General of Russia's State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom) assured him that the power plant will soon begin trial operations.

Yunus highlighted the interest of Nepal and Bhutan in supplying hydropower to Bangladesh, adding that Bangladesh is keen on receiving it.

“There is no alternative to electricity in developing Bangladesh's industrial sector. If we can import hydropower from Nepal, our dependence on fossil fuels will significantly decrease,” he remarked.

He stressed that global environmental concerns are now a top priority, and if Bangladesh can find sustainable energy solutions, it will attract more foreign investment.

The Chief Adviser described Bangladesh’s strategic geographical location as a major economic advantage.

“If Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Bhutan can develop a joint economic framework, all four nations will mutually benefit,” he said.

Yunus also emphasized Bangladesh’s vast maritime resources, pointing to significant economic opportunities.

“Our long coastline from Kumira to Teknaf presents great potential. If we can establish modern seaports, industrial plants, and export processing zones along this corridor, it will transform the region’s economy,” he stated.

He further envisioned Bangladesh as a central hub for regional trade, facilitating the movement of goods between Nepal, Bhutan, and India's northeastern states, thereby creating a highly profitable economic zone.

“Bangladesh will play a key role in regional trade and economic development,” he concluded.
