Dhaka, April 14 (V7N) - The Bangladesh High Commission in Port Louis brought the vibrant spirit of Bengali New Year to life today with a day-long celebration marking Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bengali calendar. The event united the Bangladeshi expatriate community and embassy staff in a joyous occasion filled with cultural pride and traditional festivities.

A colorful Ananda Shobhajatra procession — a symbolic part of the celebrations — was led by High Commissioner Dr. Jokey Ahad, who highlighted its global significance. “We’re proud that UNESCO has recognized this special procession as an important part of the world’s cultural heritage,” said Dr. Ahad. Addressing the gathering, he emphasized unity and optimism: “This new year is about happiness and hope. No matter where we are in the world, we carry the spirit of Bangladesh with us – the red and green of our flag, the dreams of our youth, and our hopes for a better future.” The festivities continued with a vibrant Baisakhi fair, showcasing the rich flavors of Bangladeshi cuisine. Attendees relished beloved traditional dishes like pithapuli, jhalmuri, fuchka, singara, samocha, and the iconic pantabhat.
