DHAKA, April 14, (V7N) – Bangladesh has successfully completed its humanitarian and rescue operations in response to the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28.

The Bangladeshi team, comprising Army rescue personnel, doctors, nurses, and fire-service personnel, concluded their operations and departed Myanmar on Sunday aboard the Bangladesh Navy Ship BNS Somudra Avijan. The team is expected to arrive in Chattogram on Tuesday, as confirmed by a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As part of the relief efforts, Bangladesh delivered 151.5 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Myanmar, which included food, medicine, tents, drinking water, blankets, clothing, hygiene products, and other essential items. This assistance was provided following a request from the Myanmar government.

“As a responsible neighbor and a champion in disaster management, Bangladesh stood beside the earthquake-affected people of Myanmar and responded immediately with humanitarian assistance,” the foreign ministry said in the press release.

In addition to the rescue and relief efforts, Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus sent a letter of condolence to Myanmar’s government and extended further humanitarian support.

The coordinated response involved multiple government agencies, including the Chief Adviser’s Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Armed Forces Division, Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, and the Bangladesh Embassy in Myanmar.

From March 30 to April 12, the relief operation was carried out in three phases with five Bangladeshi aircraft and one Navy ship. The total 151.5 tonnes of aid was delivered in stages:

Phase 1: On March 30, two aircraft (C-130J and CASA C-295) delivered 16.5 tonnes of aid to Yangon.

Phase 2: On April 1, three aircraft (two C-130J and one CASA C-295) transported 15 tonnes of relief, along with a 55-member rescue and medical team, to Nay Pyi Taw.

Phase 3: On April 8, the BNS Somudra Avijan departed from Chittagong with more than 120 tonnes of aid and docked in Yangon on April 11.

Throughout these phases, Bangladesh Ambassador to Myanmar personally handed over the relief materials to Myanmar authorities. Furthermore, the Bangladesh Embassy engaged with the expatriate Bangladeshi community in Myanmar to assist with humanitarian activities, particularly in Mandalay.
