DHAKA, Apr 27 (V7N) - Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain stated today that Bangladesh supports a peaceful resolution to the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan over Kashmir. He stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy as the primary methods for ensuring peace and stability throughout South Asia.
"Our position is clear …we want peace across South Asia," Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain told reporters this afternoon at the foreign ministry.
He acknowledged the long-standing conflict-prone relationship between India and Pakistan but emphasized that Dhaka does not desire any significant confrontation that could jeopardize the well-being of the region's population.
Hossain affirmed that Bangladesh maintains strong bilateral relations with both India and Pakistan.
"We hope they (India and Pakistan) resolve their differences through dialogue and consultation. Some countries have already offered mediation proposals. Regardless of whether it is through bilateral talks or mediation, we want to see tensions reduced and peace maintained," he said.
Responding to a question about whether Bangladesh would follow the lead of Iran and Saudi Arabia in offering mediation, the Adviser stated, "At this stage, we do not believe it is appropriate for us to assume any mediatory role."
However, he added, "If they (India and Pakistan) specifically seek our assistance, we will consider it. Until then, we will not take any initiative on our own."
Regarding the potential impact of India-Pakistan tensions on Bangladesh, Hossain noted that in today's interconnected world, regional developments invariably have some level of influence on all nations.
When questioned about reports of increased security measures along the Bangladesh-India border, the Adviser clarified that this matter falls under the purview of security agencies. "At the moment, I have no information suggesting any additional deployment or special security arrangements," he added.
Meanwhile, Indian media outlets have reported that Iran and Saudi Arabia have independently offered to mediate between New Delhi and Islamabad in an effort to de-escalate the situation.
