DHAKA, May 08 (V7N) - Fact-checking organization BanglaFact has concluded an investigation revealing that a statement made by Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md. Mahfuz Alam regarding the July uprising has been misrepresented. According to BanglaFact's report published on its Facebook page today, segments of his speech were omitted and presented in a way that conveys a misleading impression.

The report addressed a widely circulated video on social media which claimed that the adviser recently commented on the July Uprising by stating, "Two thousand people were not martyred, there was just a conspiracy to remove Hasina."

BanglaFact clarified that during his address as the chief guest at a seminar titled "Murder and Persecution of Journalists during the Fascist Regime," organized by the Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust in Dhaka on May 5th, Md. Mahfuz Alam actually said, "I would like to take this opportunity to say that some newspapers do not write the term 'July Uprising'. They write 'July Movement'. They do not say that the July government is a government of mass uprising, they say it is the government after the changeover of power. They say the changeover of power. Do you know the English for this? Its English is regime change, regime change means that which is the Indian narrative where regime change has taken place, a regime change operation has taken place, 2000 people were not martyred here, there was just a conspiracy here and Hasina was overthrown. No media outlet can do this."

BanglaFact stated that, in his actual speech, the adviser's intention was to emphasize that responsible media should not belittle the July uprising or portray what was a people's revolution as a simple changeover of power.

The fact-checking body concluded that the sentences "Where the regime has changed, 2000 people have not been martyred, there was just a conspiracy and Hasina has been overthrown" were taken out of context from Md. Mahfuz Alam's complete statement, leading to a distorted and misleading publication.
