Tangail, August 5 (V7N) – The anniversary of the July-August 2024 mass uprising was observed in Tangail on Tuesday through a range of programs organized by the district administration, political parties, and academic institutions.
In a state-sponsored program at the Shilpakala Academy, the Tangail district administration hosted a special gathering with the families of those killed and injured in the 2024 uprising, as well as local participants in the movement. Presided over by Tangail Deputy Commissioner Sharifa Haque, the event featured speeches from Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman, former district coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Al Amin, Member Secretary Abu Ahmed Sher Shah, and Student Federation President Fatema Rahman Bithi, along with relatives of the victims.
The gathering began with a moment of silence in memory of those who died during the uprising, followed by a screening of a documentary film highlighting the events and sacrifices of July 2024. Injured participants and the families of the deceased were honored with commemorative tokens presented by the July Foundation. Senior district and upazila officials also attended the event.
Separately, the Tangail district and town branches of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) organized a victory rally and discussion meeting to mark the uprising anniversary. The rally began at the Central Shaheed Minar and proceeded through key roads in the town.
The BNP event featured Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, Central Publicity Secretary of the BNP, as the chief guest. Other notable speakers included Tangail District BNP President Hasanuzamil Shahin and General Secretary Advocate Farhad Iqbal. The discussion was chaired by Tangail Sadar Upazila BNP President Md. Azgar Ali, with speeches from former District Member Secretary Mahmudul Haque Sanu and City BNP President Mehedi Hasan Alim. The program was hosted by Sadar Upazila BNP General Secretary Md. Abdur Rauf.
Earlier in the day, Maulana Bhashani Science and Technology University also commemorated the anniversary with a series of campus-wide events. Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Anwarul Azim Akhand inaugurated the day’s program with a colorful rally starting from the administrative building.
The procession concluded at the academic building, followed by a special prayer and Milad Mahfil held at the university’s central mosque, seeking blessings for those who lost their lives in the uprising.
In the evening, a cultural performance was held at the university’s open-air stage where students presented songs, poetry, and short plays reflecting on the spirit of the popular movement. Students, faculty, and staff participated enthusiastically throughout the day, marking the occasion with solemnity and respect.
