Khulna, Oct 14 (V7N) – For the first time in Bangladesh, the Divisional Commissioner of Khulna, Firoz Government, has implemented a transparent lottery-based system to assign postings for upazila land offices, effectively eliminating bribery and corruption from the process.
Previously, appointments to the most sought-after upazila positions were often influenced by illegal payments and favoritism. Under the new system, the postings are now assigned randomly through a lottery, ensuring fairness and compliance with government regulations. Civil society representatives, journalists, and community leaders witnessed the process to ensure transparency.
According to the rules, candidates are not posted to their home districts or areas where they have close family connections, such as their in-laws’ residences. The names of all 21 upazilas in Khulna division were written on separate slips and placed in a lottery box. Eligible candidates then drew lots to determine their postings.
This innovative approach has set a new precedent in Bangladesh’s administrative practices. Many previous appointments had been delayed or influenced by bribery, but Commissioner Firoz’s initiative has successfully ensured corruption-free placement of officers, establishing a model for other divisions to follow.
Officials and observers have praised the initiative as a significant step toward promoting transparency, accountability, and fairness in government appointments, enhancing public trust in the administrative system.
