On Wednesday, (May 29th) the third phase of the elections for the Sixth Upazila Parishad is being held in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar. All preparations by the Upazila administration have been completed.
Election arrangements are being monitored by law enforcement personnel from five tiers – RAB, BGB, police, Ansar, and VDP members. Five magistrates, one judicial magistrate, four platoons of BGB, 300 police personnel, sufficient Ansar members, VDP members, and 19 RAB members will be deployed to ensure law and order during the election.
Additionally, a technical team of 32 members has been formed for Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Each center will have one member responsible for the EVMs.
On Tuesday (May 28th), in the afternoon, the Upazila Executive Officer and Magistrate Tanveer Hossain inspected the potentially vulnerable centers with a mobile team. After concluding inspections at various centers in Palongkhali and Jalialapalang Union, Ukhiya Upazila Officer Tanveer Hossain stated that the overall situation for the election is normal. Law enforcement agencies, including RAB, police, and Ansar, have been tasked with ensuring unbiased, fair, and impartial elections. The Upazila administration and law enforcement agencies are fully prepared to prevent any violence or disturbances related to the election.
Muhammad Mizanur Rahman, Ukhiya Upazila Election Officer and Assistant Returning Officer, stated, "All preparations have been completed with the aim of conducting the election smoothly, impartially, and without hindrance. Election equipment has been delivered to every center."
In the third phase of the Ukhiya Upazila Parishad election, 10 candidates are competing for three positions. Among them, two are running for the Chairman position, five for Vice Chairman, and three for Female Vice Chairman. While initially three candidates were in the running for the Chairman position, one withdrew two days before the election.
After the withdrawal of decorated freedom fighter Zafar Alam Chowdhury, who campaigned on horseback, a heated contest is underway between Awami League's Chairman Jahangir Kabir Chowdhury and Awami League's former general secretary Abu Mansur Chowdhury, who campaigned on a motorcycle.
For the Vice Chairman position, five candidates are competing, including the current Chairman of the Upazila Parishad, Jahangir Alam (nicknamed Tube Well), Mohammad Russell Chowdhury (nicknamed Tala), Kamal Uddin Mintu (Assistant General Secretary of Ukhiya Upazila Awami League), Gofur Mia Chowdhury (nicknamed Chashma), and Maulana Gofur Ullah (nicknamed Boi).
In addition, three women are competing for the reserved positions of Female Vice Chairman – the current Female Vice Chairman of the Upazila Parishad, Kamrunnesa Baby (nicknamed Kalsi), Shahin Akhter (nicknamed Hans), and Sanjida Akhter Maya (nicknamed Projapoti).
According to sources from the Upazila Election Office, Ukhiya Upazila has a total of 151,564 voters. Among them, there are 78,550 male voters and 73,114 female voters. There are 62 voting centers, with a total of 355 booths, including 344 permanent booths and 11 temporary booths.
For the first time, voters in Ukhiya have the opportunity to cast their votes using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
"Wednesday, from 8 AM to 4 PM, voting will take place continuously."
