Dhaka, Oct 23 (V7N) – Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has submitted a review petition to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, seeking to reconsider the ruling that abolished the caretaker government system. This petition was filed on Wednesday by Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, as confirmed by party lawyer Mohammad Shishir Manir.

The Appellate Division's chamber judge had previously scheduled a hearing for two separate review petitions concerning the ruling against the caretaker government system for Thursday. This will be addressed in a full bench of the Appellate Division.

On October 16, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also filed a review petition challenging the same ruling, while Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, Secretary of Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan), submitted a separate review application in August.

The caretaker government system was established through the 13th amendment to the constitution, adopted by parliament in 1996. However, in 2011, the Supreme Court's Appellate Division deemed this amendment “illegal,” thereby annulling the caretaker system. Despite this ruling, the court, led by then-Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque, indicated that the 10th and 11th elections could still be held under a caretaker government, suggesting that any decision regarding the chief adviser of the caretaker government should be made through parliamentary consensus.
