Dhaka, Oct 25 (V7N) – Zakir Hossain, the former State Minister for Primary and Mass Education, has been granted a three-day remand in connection with the shooting death of an electrician named Shamim Howladar. The incident occurred in the Beribandh area of Mohammadpur, Dhaka, during the anti-discrimination student movement on July 20.

On Friday afternoon, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court in Dhaka approved the remand order following a hearing. Sub-Inspector Raju Ahmed of Mohammadpur Police Station, the investigating officer, initially requested a five-day remand to further probe Hossain's involvement. After reviewing the request, Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akhtar granted a three-day remand instead.

The former minister was apprehended on Thursday afternoon in the Mohammadpur area, where police executed the arrest order.

According to the case details, the deceased, Shamim Howladar, worked as an electrician. He was reportedly shot during a public demonstration and sustained critical injuries. He was immediately taken to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Following Shamim's death, a murder case was filed by his cousin at the Mohammadpur Police Station.

He served on the Standing Committee of the Ministry of Labour, Manpower, and Employment. In the 11th National Parliament election, he was re-elected in the same constituency and subsequently appointed as State Minister of Primary and Mass Education.
