Dhaka, Nov 07 (V7N) — The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has frozen all the bank accounts of Shakib Al Hasan, a former member of parliament from Magura-1 constituency and former captain of the Bangladesh national cricket team. The move comes as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities and manipulation in the capital market.
Bangladesh Bank spokesperson, Husne Ara Shikha, confirmed the freezing of Shakib’s bank accounts in a statement to the media on Wednesday.
The BFIU had previously summoned information regarding Shakib Al Hasan’s financial activities, including details of his bank accounts, his wife Umme Ahmed Shishir's accounts, and those of his business entities. This was part of a probe initiated on October 2 to examine suspected financial misconduct. Following this investigation, the decision was made to freeze his accounts.
Shakib Al Hasan, who was elected as an Awami League candidate in the 12th National Parliament elections on January 7, 2024, representing the Magura-1 constituency, has been living abroad since the fall of the government on August 5, 2024, amid widespread student and public protests.
The move to freeze Shakib's accounts marks a significant development in ongoing investigations into financial irregularities in the country.
