London, Nov 07 (V7N)- Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman urged all nationalist forces to unite under the spirit of November 7 to strengthen democracy and safeguard the nation’s independence and sovereignty. His remarks, shared via a verified Facebook post, marked the National Revolution and Solidarity Day.

Extending greetings to the nation, Tarique highlighted the historical importance of November 7, 1975, when soldiers and citizens, driven by patriotism, rallied to protect national independence and restore democracy. He described this event as a pivotal moment in the nation's history.

Reflecting on the post-independence period, Tarique noted that political instability and self-interest led the ruling powers to threaten Bangladesh’s sovereignty by enforcing a one-party state under Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League (Baksal), thereby stifling democratic freedoms. "Democracy was obstructed, and people's freedom of speech was suppressed in an undemocratic and authoritarian manner," he remarked.

Tarique recalled how, during the crisis, Ziaur Rahman, who declared the nation’s independence, was detained with his family on November 3, 1975. Four days later, on November 7, patriotic soldiers and civilians mobilized, freeing Ziaur Rahman and reestablishing democratic aspirations. Under Ziaur Rahman's leadership, the BNP leader said, multi-party democracy took root, strengthening the country’s independence and sovereignty.

Tarique also condemned what he called the “foreign-backed, authoritarian” rule of the Awami League, accusing it of destabilizing Bangladesh's sovereignty through suppression of political freedoms and extrajudicial actions. He further alleged that the Awami League's rule led to a weakening of national culture, tradition, and language, and accused the party of orchestrating forced disappearances and political oppression.

Reaffirming the BNP's commitment, Tarique emphasized the need for free and fair elections, the restoration of basic democratic rights, and the unification of nationalist forces to uphold democracy and sovereignty.
