Dhaka, Dec 14 (V7N)- BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has accused the Awami League of isolating itself from the people by undermining democracy and engaging in oppressive actions. Speaking at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Mirpur on Saturday, Mirza Fakhrul criticized the ruling party for failing to attend the event commemorating the nation's martyred intellectuals.

"The Awami League has alienated itself from the people by destroying democracy and committing acts akin to genocide. This is why they could not be present today," he stated.

During the tribute ceremony, Fakhrul expressed optimism about the country’s political future, referencing the establishment of an interim government. "We are cooperating with the interim government and are hopeful that a free, fair, and impartial election will soon allow the people to elect their true representatives," he said.

Marking the solemn occasion of Martyred Intellectuals Day, Fakhrul reflected on the atrocities of December 14, 1971, when the Pakistani occupation forces abducted and killed journalists, professors, scientists, and other intellectuals just before the nation’s victory in the Liberation War. "On behalf of the BNP, its Chairperson Khaleda Zia, and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, we pay our respects to these martyrs and seek forgiveness for their souls," he added.

Reiterating the BNP’s vision, Fakhrul pledged to honor the ideals of the Liberation War by building an independent, democratic, and prosperous Bangladesh. "We take an oath today to fulfill the dreams for which the people of Bangladesh fought in 1971—a dream declared by the War of Liberation’s leader, Martyr President Ziaur Rahman," he said.

Highlighting recent political developments, he remarked, "Events like July 36 and August 5 have created a new opportunity by defeating fascist forces. We aim to utilize this opportunity to establish a truly democratic, modern, and inclusive Bangladesh."

Fakhrul was joined by BNP leaders including Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan, Dr. Moin Khan, Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, and Dhaka Metropolitan leaders Aminul Islam and Abdus Salam, along with activists and supporters.
