In protest of the 12th parliamentary election, which is scheduled for Sunday, the BNP on Thursday announced a 48-hour nationwide hartal that would begin early on Saturday.

The 12th parliamentary election will take place during the shutdown in conjunction with the launch of the BNP's new programme.

Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Senior Joint Secretary General of the BNP, made the news during a virtual press session.
He stated that the hartal will start on Saturday at 6 a.m. and terminate on Monday at 6 a.m.

Rizvi had earlier announced during another virtual press conference that their party would stage processions and hold large-scale rallies nationwide on Friday in opposition to the election.

According to him, the goal of their agenda is to mobilise the people to back the party's call for a boycott of the January 7 election.
Just two days before the poll, on Friday, other opposition parties with identical goals will also observe a similar programme, according to Rizvi.
Rizvi urged the leaders and members of the opposition to lend their impromptu support to the initiative to ensure its success.
The party had earlier on Monday extended their programme of mass contact and leaflet distribution until today, Thursday.
The party declared on December 24 that it would launch a three-day campaign of mass interaction and leaflet distribution on December 26. The programme was later extended three times.

But beginning October 29, the BNP and other like-minded parties have imposed nationwide hartals for five days throughout four periods, and blockades for 23 days in 12 phases.
On December 20, the opposition party finally came up with the idea for a movement of non-cooperation.
The 12th Parliamentary election will be held countrywide on January 7 during the 48-hour hartal period, which runs from January 6 to January 8.
