Dhaka, Jan 22 (V7N)— The BNP has reiterated its demand for elections to be held by 2025, with support from like-minded political parties. Senior party leaders warned that if the government refuses this demand, they would consider launching a nationwide movement.

At a separate event in Dhaka, BNP Standing Committee member Dr. Abdul Moin Khan, alongside UK BNP leaders, paid tribute to the tomb of the party’s founder and former President Ziaur Rahman. Speaking at the event, Dr. Khan criticised the Awami League, accusing it of betraying the nation and displaying authoritarian behaviour.

“We have no interest in participating in elections under a dictatorship,” said Dr. Khan. He further alleged that the Awami League had abandoned the country during critical moments, referring to the Liberation War of 1971 and recent public movements.

In another development, the BNP held formal talks with the Khelafat Majlis after leaving the 18-party alliance. This morning, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir met with Khelafat Majlis leaders at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan.

Following the hour-long meeting, both parties announced their alignment on the timing of elections, agreeing they must be held by 2025. Khelafat Majlis leaders emphasised that reforms are essential before elections, and delaying the vote would only increase public discontent.

BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan added that the party would consider a movement if the interim government rejected their demands.

Regarding US politics, Mr. Khan stated that the upcoming US presidential election would not significantly affect Bangladesh’s relations with the United States, which he said would remain stable.

The BNP's position signals a potential escalation in political tension if the ruling party does not accommodate their demands for timely elections.
